I was bored and made a commercial for Komarów this weekend.

Hallelujah
Last month I went to Ligatura Comics Festival to have a look at the freshly printed and translated edition of my comic Muggen named Komarów in Polish. It was printed by the Polish publisher Centrala because I won the Ligatura Pitch at the festival in 2012. I can recommend any comics artist to participate in the pitch next year.

The book was translated by Slawomier Paszkiet with support of the Dutch Foundation for Literature. The lay-out was designed by Kamil Macejko and the translated text was handwritten by Ada Buchholc. They all did a beautiful job and their websites can be found here.

At the festival a give a presentation and talked mainly about the process of creating the book. I thought it would be interesting because my method of working is highly systematic and extensive. It often begins with writing some ideas which will develop into sketches. Then I'm working on the layout of the page. It's very important for me where a drawing is placed in the frame and the overall page. If I know what a page should look like, I often make reverence material. Then I start drawing. First I sketch with pencil and then I paint with gouache.
The final chapter of the book tells about a big disaster in the town. The disaster is the arrival of a number of giant creatures. I thought it would be interesting to give them the look as if they where from another dimension. My first idea was to depict the creatures in color for the rest of the story is printed in black.
Eventually I wanted the ending of the book to be like Japanese live-action series such as Super Sentai (which later became The Power Rangers). In these television series monsters are men in costumes destroying miniature cities.
I started to design my own costumes and made them with the help of the beautiful and talented Suzanne Kollen. Ultimately we came up with five suitable monsters for the book. I photographed people in different positions wearing the costumes. These pictures where slightly edited in photoshop and printed on paper. The rest of the comic-world was then drawn around it.
In the lecture I showed all the different stages of this pretty complex process.
If you want to buy the book you can do this here http://www.centrala.org.pl/publikacja/komarow-bart-nijstad You can also buy it from me with a special Polish to Dutch translation booklet. Please contact me at nijstadbart@gmail.com if you didn't already ask for it on facebook.

Storyboard for chapter 4
The end is near. I only need to draw another 36 pages and then I will be finished. I am really excited of making these last pages because it will be a big challenge to try and integrate photography with my drawings. The "end-time creatures" are going to be people in costumes as seen on one of my previous posts. The storyboard doesn't show the complete story. The last pages I will keep a secret for now.

In the following images you can see a finished page next to the photograph collage I use to create the page. I recently I also started to dress-up for these photographs. I use these images for light, posture and expressions. In the background of some photographs you can also see a fantastic painting by Gijs Deddens.

Muggen meets E=OH
